The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) recognises several shooting events, some of which have Olympic status. They are divided into four disciplines: rifle, pistol, shotgun and running target.

For Pistol the main catergories are:
10m Air Pistol
25m Rapid Fire Pistol
25m Sport Pistol
50 Free Pistol

Other categories and disciplines exist however. Currently Semi Automatic pistols can not be held by civilians without special permission from the Home Office under section 5 of the firearms act. Special exceptions exist for the military however under crown exemption allowing the military an excellent opportunity over its civilian counter parts.
